Gatlinburg Riverwalk, Streetscape and Infrastructure Relocation

Gatlinburg Riverwalk, Streetscape and Infrastructure Relocation
Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Making a tourism-oriented mountain village even more pedestrian-friendly, BWSC provided surveying, landscape architecture and engineering design for major improvements to downtown Gatlinburg. The five-phase project included a riverwalk along the Little Pigeon River, relocation of two miles of utilities underground, and new streetscape on nearly every major street.

Streetscape and Infrastructure Relocation Phase I: The Riverwalk
BWSC provided surveying, landscape architecture and engineering design for a pedestrian walkway along the Little Pigeon River. Some of the elements involved in this project included walks, street furnishings, landscaping, river overlooks, lighting, 120-foot pedestrian bridge across the river, and underground placement of almost a mile of overhead primary power, telephone and cable television utilities. The riverwalk was constructed using patterned and colored reinforced concrete walks with grade beams and cantilevered sections to minimize disturbance of the existing riverbank and to resist damage from high velocity flood waters.

Streetscape and Infrastructure Relocation: Phases II-V
These projects taking place from 1997 to 2006 have dramatically transformed Parkway in downtown Gatlinburg by removing all overhead utility lines, replacing the existing sidewalks with decorative brick banding, adding street furnishings, landscaping, and decorative crosswalks, replacing signage, and providing new street and pedestrian lighting.  The total cost for Phases II-IV has been $11 million.  Phase V was completed in May, 2007 at a cost of $3.8 million.
