New H-60 Helicopter Hangar, NAVFAC Southeast
NAS Jacksonville, Florida
A new helicopter hangar in Jacksonville houses approximately 57 MH-60R “Romeo” helicopters, the newest aircraft in the Navy’s fleet, and provides the Navy with the very best in modern infrastructure while holding the distinction as being the second ‘green’ hangar in the Navy. BWSC was responsible for architecture; civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering design services for this facility on a design/build team. The project included demolition of two World War II-era hangars that were replaced by the new 200,000-SF facility with 100,000 square feet in hangar space, 40,000 square feet in administrative office space, 50,000 square feet in maintenance areas, and 10,000 square feet in storage. Sustainability aspects include the utilization of 1,700 tons of structural steel in which 98% was recycled, support of a rain water collection system that uses recycled water for a helicopter wash rack, and day lighting of 75% of the floor space through a roof monitor running the length of the hangar space.

Key Points:
  • Significant permitting efforts critical to project schedule
  • Below-ground storage tanks for aqueous film forming foam discharge
  • Constructed adjacent to active aircraft taxiways
  • Facility houses 1,400 personnel
