BWSC assisted the Tuckaleechee Heritage Cultural Society; the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; the City of Townsend, Tennessee; and Blount County, Tennessee in preparing successful grant applications that resulted in acquiring $1,000,000 in 2001 TEA-21 funds and $400,000 in Rural Development low interest loans. BWSC’s architects and engineers designed the 10,000 square foot museum for housing artifacts from the pioneer families that originally settled in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as relics from archaeological digs of Cherokee and Native American settlements in Blount County. The facility includes display and exhibit areas along with two classrooms, a 100-seat auditorium, gift shop, and a 500-seat outdoor amphitheater. The building was designed to accommodate future expansions.
