Chattanooga, TN —On October 28, the United States Department of the Interior announced that the Chattanooga Riverwalk will be highlighted as part of the America’s Great Outdoors initiative report soon to be released. The Chattanooga Riverwalk is a multi-phased project owned by the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County that will result in a 20-mile-long greenway along the Tennessee River front. Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon, Inc. (BWSC) has designed multiple phases of the current 13 miles of the project and recently won the contract for design of the next phase to extend the greenway from Ross’s Landing to the base of Lookout Mountain.

The projects highlighted in the upcoming report represent “what states believe are the best investments in the nation to support a healthy, active population, and create travel, tourism, and outdoor recreation jobs across the country” according to the America’s Great Outdoors website.

“Through this initiative, we’re reconnecting Americans with the great outdoors and helping to put local residents to work cleaning up the areas that they cherish,” comments EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “In preserving their environment, Americans are creating healthier, more vibrant communities today and ensuring lasting prosperity for future generations.”

The BWSC Chattanooga office has been active in multiple outdoor projects in the Chattanooga area including the South Chickamauga Greenway, the Cherokee Removal Memorial Gardens, and the Summit of Softball athletic complex.

“Chattanooga is a different city than it was in the early 70s,” comments Matt Stovall, Office Manager for the BWSC Chattanooga office. “The citizens have worked hard and transformed Chattanooga into a clean city with multiple outdoor venues. We are happy to be a part of that.”
