Dayton, OH – Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon, Inc. (BWSC), has been notified that the Fort Bliss Brigade Combat Team (BCT) Enlisted Personnel Dining Facility BCT02, designed by joint venture partners BWSC and KZF, has been certified LEED Silver by the US Green Building Council. LEED Green Building Certification is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED certification offers third party validation of a project’s green features and verifies that the building is operating as designed.

As part of the joint venture with KZF, BWSC provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the 29,000-SF facility. The facility was designed to handle a meal volume of 1,300 soldiers during three, 90-minute meal periods per day. A Meal Replacement Station capable of handling up to 15% of the main seating capacity was also included. The facility was designed in 2007 and construction was completed in 2009 at a cost of $9 million. It is one of four dining facilities BWSC/KZF has designed at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The Ft. Bliss Dining Facility project was evaluated across five categories for impact on energy efficiency and CO2 reductions – Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Scoring across these categories is based on environmental impact categories including climate change, indoor environmental quality, resource depletion, and water intake. The Ft. Bliss Dining Facility was designed to take advantage of the use of recycled materials, conservation of water and energy, waste reduction, reduced site disturbance, alternative transportation modes, and creation of a healthy and safe work environment. Buildings certified LEED compliant are cheaper to operate and maintain, are healthier for occupants, and demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship by their owners and designers.
