Scott AFB, IL – The Headquarters of Air Mobility Command (AMC) of the US Air Force announced the 2011 AMC Design Awards for Programs, Planning Studies and Design Guides winner as the “Post-Base Realignment and Closure Airmen’s Campus Area Development Plan” designed by the KZF/Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc. Joint Venture and currently under construction.
The campus design was created to integrate an “Air Force character” into the emerging base that will result from the integration of Pope Air Force Base into Fort Bragg, creating Pope Airfield. In order to retain a distinctly Air Force feel to the area, KZF/BWSC was retained to design a new campus working with the existing features of the base and implementing improvements in traffic flow, landscape design, and usability. Design team members met with base officials and staff to develop a plan that met all their needs while creating a campus that is cohesive in feel and integrates many sustainable design elements.
“The Base leadership has been very clear what their priorities and expectations are for this new campus,” comments Lynn Cain, Project Manager. “I was so impressed with the design team’s ability to listen, understand and creatively address the leadership’s needs. They worked very hard to bring the expectations and concepts into affordable reality allowing the Air Force to retain a distinct identity within Ft. Bragg. It is being described by the leadership as a legacy project for the Air Force.”
The design team worked closely with the Civil Engineering (CE) squadron at Pope AFB and the base architect to conduct a site analysis and consider various options for the design. Base officials and representatives selected the first concept with very few requested changes. The overall effort has led to additional work compiling design/build RFP packages for three pilot projects to be issued for bid in 2011.
“AMC’s nomination of this project recognizes BWSC’s technical capability and skill in working with its clients and project partners to successfully execute specialized projects,” states Bruce Anderson, Federal Program Director for BWSC. “This recognition is something the project team and Federal Program can be enormously proud of.”
The Post-BRAC design now goes forward to the all-Air Force level competition where it will compete against designs from around the globe for top honors. Judging for the award at the Air Force-wide level will take place in February, 2011. |
