Knoxville, TN – The University of Tennessee-Battelle, operating contractor of the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), recently presented Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc. (BWSC) with a Certificate of Appreciation for work performed since 2009 on the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (AML) at ORNL. The AML is a world-leading facility housing four aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopes (STEM) able to view particles at the atomic level.

“In my long experience of working with the Department of Energy, I’ve never known an operating contractor to award such recognition to an A/E firm,” comments Steve Fritts, BWSC’s Principal-in-Charge of work at ORNL. “It is truly an honor and we are proud of our team’s performance.”

Housing these highly sensitive instruments, the AML facility was designed and constructed to provide the best environment for aberration-corrected electron optical instrumentation. BWSC provided complete design services for the laboratory including architecture, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil and surveying.

The project presented some very challenging key design criteria to the project team including minimization of AC magnetic fields, floor vibrations, air flow volume, temperature stability and acoustic sound. Tolerances were minimal such as temperature stability of less than .1 degree Celsius; floor vibrations of less than 1 µm/s peak at less than 30 Hz; magnetic stray fields, ambient of ~.05 mG rms at 60 Hz; and less than 2 cm/s of air flow.

The BWSC architecture/engineering project team members were awarded copies of the UT-Battelle Certificate and merit awards by the BWSC leadership team for their outstanding performance on the project.
