Chattanooga Creek was one of the nation’s most polluted creeks. Contaminants included coal tar and coal-tar constituents including Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Barge Waggoner teamed with a nationally known environmental remediation firm on what was to become one of the largest single remediation projects in Tennessee.
Barge Waggoner supplied engineering design, surveying, environmental monitoring, and elements of construction assistance for the removal of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of coal tar and coal-tar sediments from a two-mile segment of the creek. Once the coal tar and contaminated sediment were removed, they were treated with a drying agent at doses prescribed by our engineers, allowed to cure, and then disposed as a Special Waste in a local, state-permitted landfill.
